Whitby’s independent businesses are coming together on Saturday 24 October for ‘Lemon Bun Day’, which marks the official launch of the town’s new Artisan Quarter.
Organised as part of the Flowergate and Beyond project, led by Botham’s of Whitby and Flash Company Arts CIC, Lemon Bun Day invites residents and visitors to explore the independent shops, creative businesses and distinctive streets that make this part of Whitby such an interesting place to discover, and celebrate the iconic Botham’s Lemon Bun with giveaways and a Lemon Bunny Trail.
The Artisan Quarter brings together Flowergate and neighbouring streets, including Skinner Street, Brunswick Street and Golden Lion Bank, celebrating an area with a rich mix of independent retailers, makers, artists, cafés and other small businesses. The project was developed in collaboration with local businesses and residents to raise the area’s profile, encourage people to explore beyond the town’s more familiar shopping routes, and strengthen connections between those who live and work there.
Flowergate and Beyond is funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, under the leadership of Mayor David Skaith. The project is working with businesses, residents, and organisations to develop the Artisan Quarter as a recognisable destination, celebrate its independent character, and encourage new opportunities for collaboration.
Rebecca Denniff, Director of Flash Company Arts, said:
“We’ve got such an extraordinary collection of independent businesses in this part of Whitby, and we wanted to find a way to celebrate what makes the area special. Flowergate and Beyond is all about working with the people who know these streets best, building on what’s already here and encouraging new ideas and collaborations.
“What’s been really exciting is seeing businesses begin to work together and hearing people naturally refer to the Artisan Quarter. It’s starting to develop an identity that people recognise and feel part of, and Lemon Bun Day gives us a chance to celebrate that together.”
Over recent months, Flowergate and Beyond has been working with businesses and residents to develop the Artisan Quarter identity, encourage participation and create opportunities for collaboration. A new visual identity is developing, alongside a business newsletter and opportunities for locals to share ideas and contribute to the project.
The launch marks the next phase of a wider programme, with further events and initiatives planned to support the area’s independent businesses. These include Light Up the Artisan Quarter on Saturday 14 November, which is being developed by a working group of local businesses and partners.
