North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue say: “avoid having garden bonfires”

Following the Government’s emergency alert message, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue say their Control Room has been receiving a high number of calls from people concerned about neighbours having barbecues or outdoor fires.

The Service said:

“We understand people’s concerns, particularly while conditions remain very dry, but we can only respond where there is an emergency that threatens life or property.

“Although we’ve had some rain recently, the ground is still extremely dry. We continue to ask everyone to act responsibly, whether you’re at home or enjoying the countryside.

“If you’re having a barbecue at home:

  • Keep it well away from trees, fences, sheds and other combustible materials.
  • Never leave it unattended.

“We would ask that whilst the ground is so dry you avoid having garden bonfires.

“If you’re visiting the countryside:

  • Take a picnic instead of a disposable or portable barbecue.
  • Do not light campfires.
  • Take all litter home with you, especially glass bottles and jars.
  • Dispose of smoking materials properly.

“In an emergency, always call 999.”
